The Benefits Of Modafinil For Shift Work Sleep Disorders

Shift work sleep disorder (SWSD) is associated with numerous negative consequences including drowsy driving accidents, dangerous workplace mistakes, and reduced quality of life. Fortunately, the wakefulness-promoting medication modafinil is effective in treating SWSD.

However, the study was only 12 weeks long, and tolerance to the drug might have developed by the end of the experiment. Therefore, further studies of longer duration are needed to assess the clinical usefulness of this wake-promoting medication.

Modafinil reversed these effects on shift-change day and evening. A larger dose also attenuated shift-change-associated changes in sleep onset latency.
